“I have to say that I was truly impressed with the Citizen McCaw learning resource DVDs. I teach a senior level Media Ethics class and on the advice of one of my colleagues in film, I decided to base the first part of our term on the issues brought up in McCaw.
I believe in using real world case studies in conjunction with theoretical concepts in my class and this film worked in wonderfully. My students thought that the film really introduced issues that they could run into once they started to work in the field. It was very interesting for me to watch how my younger students, without any true work experience in the field, took to this film. I think I was more amazed at how my students who are actually working full time in Print and Broadcast right now, took to this film and how it captures some of their current concerns.
As a teacher, the film and the accompanying DVDs, are a great tool for the classroom. The way the SPJ code is broken down to show the four elements and how they are relevant in the film was a great idea. I plan to use these resources over and over so that my students can understand the day-to-day conflict of Ethics they may have to face.”

“The film Citizen McCaw covered a variety of issues that are important for journalism students to understand. One of the issues was absolute power of ownership verses a public trust in a news gathering organization. The film made me think about what I would have done if I were put in the situation that the reporters from the Santa Barbra News Press were put in. It made me think about my own journalistic morals and ethics.
I think the film is a very well made, and the producers have created something very beneficial for journalism students to see. The film shows there are far more aspects to a newsroom then just the story gathering and writing. Not only do reporters have to deal with editor, but also the ownerships agenda. ”

“I thought your film Citizen McCaw was a particularly interesting story and a perfect case study for our Media Ethics class to discuss. Rarely does one find such complete coverage of extremely controversial issues within the journalism world. The News Press story is an especially good case study as it very recent and very relevant to what we are studying.
As students entering the field of photojournalism it is important for us to be aware of the limits and boundaries inherent in reporting, particularly with higher powers. The Wendy McCaw story is a reminder that at some point each of us may have to choose between personal ethics and occupational demands, and that such a decision is difficult at best. Your film really made me think about what I want to stand for as a journalist, and how that may affect my career. I think I can fairly call it a valuable asset to aspiring journalists and newspapers in the future. ”

“ As a student not only of film, but primarily of the documentary genre, I found Citizen McCaw to be an incredible demonstration of documentary filmmaking’s power. The team behind this engaging and heartfelt documentary tackled the important issues of ethics, free speech and honor with a passion rarely felt in film. Furthermore, their film not only acts as a whistleblower to the corruption of the Santa Barbara News Press, it demonstrates the utter necessity of investigative journalism. Watching this film as a student, I felt like it was truly possible to make a difference and it made me want to make a film of the same caliber. I think Citizen McCaw should be used to demonstrate that in this growing climate of media apathy, it is still possible to do the right thing.”

“Citizen McCaw was inspirational for our CSUN journalism students; in fact, they said it was one of the highlights of the semester. While we might teach our code of ethics and offer examples of compromising situations, it has incredible impact when students can get a close-up of these dilemmas as they did in this dynamic documentary. It is a must for all journalists -- young and old.”

“I loved this screening because of its inspirational value and how it was put together. To an aspiring journalist, it is an eye-opening experience because you think the evil a journalist needs to fight against is corrupt politicians or eluding councilmen, but here the enemy is the publisher. In the movie world, the audience is inspired to believe that the truth will prevail. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. In the case of the journalists in Santa Barbara, they were willing to give up their very livelihoods in order for the truth to prevail. It's inspiring because it teaches an aspiring journalist that if you stick to your ethics, you can do no wrong.”

“Citizen McCaw was an extremely useful learning tool in exposing the reality of ethical dilemmas. The movie was effective and inspired students to create their own code of ethics. ”

“Regarding feedback on the DVDs--all I know is our director, Dr. Jane Briggs-Bunting, mentioned that the people who have used it are very impressed. ”
